Ten Questions You Should Ask when buying Skin Care Creams.

Today is the day to try something new in YOUR skin care!

But how do you go about choosing a new skin cream?  Ask questions, test the cream on your skin or ask a person who is using a cream different from yours why they are using it.  The first things to consider are,  what do you want the skin cream to do and,  What ingredients are good for you?

top 10 skin questionsHere are some additional questions for a basic start.

1. What is the difference between Natural and Organic?

According to Dr. Doris Day in the April 2008 issue of Health magazine:

  • Natural refers to ingredients derived from plants, minerals, or algae.
  • Organic describes substances grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and processed without man-made chemicals.
  • Made with Organic Ingredients means that 70% or greater of the ingredients are organic content.
  • USDA Certified Organic is the highest standard.  USDA Certified Organic means that 95-100% of ingredients must meet USDA organic standards for food and will soon have standards for organic cosmetics.  Look for more information about USDA Certified Organic standards.
  • Most products that contain “organic” ingredients have never been through clinical trials in beauty and skin care, so their overall superior effectiveness hasn’t been definitively proven.

2. What type of preservatives are used in creams

Synthetic such as Parabens are the most commonly used preservatives in personal care products. However, Parabens are only one group of many different types of preservatives that have been shown to cause a host of skin irritations, such as dryness, redness and even breakouts.   Of the synthetic preservatives, paraben-based preservatives seem by far less dangerous, both for the skin, and for the environment, than most other types of synthetic type of preservatives.

When caring for sensitive skin, it’s important to avoid all types of synthetic preservatives especially if it is the only type used in a skin care product.

Natural preservatives are less effective for extending shelf life and protecting against bacteria, fungi, yeast and other potentially dangerous microorganisms.  Some of the natural inhibitors may actually themselves be toxic to your skin.  So it is important for you to ensure that the ingredients in the creams are right for the chemistry of your personal skin.

A combination of both types in a product is advisable.  Ultimately, it is a matter of personal preference, but be informed of the ingredients in what you are buying.

3. Does the order of ingredients mean anything?

The order of ingredients indicates the ranking of the ingredients by volume.  You do not see ingredients listed as a percentage of the whole formulation, e.g. Water 25%, Aloe 45% (Not correct percentages in a particular brand of cream) because it would make the creams easier to duplicate by other manufacturers.

4. Why do some of the ingredients have the names in latin

There is great variation in the quality of the individual ingredients either in the type of plant or chemical formulation used that may have the same generic name. .  For instance, honey is not just the color you see in the stores.  Honey comes in a wide variety of colors from tan to black as tar.  It depends on the source plant or tree that the bees pollinate.  By giving its scientific name in Latin, the user can determine from research what is in the cream.  If not sure, communicate with the manufacturer.

Look on line for types of honey and see the wide difference.  Look at Vitamins C, E, & B on different brand labels to verify the wide range of composition materials for each one of these.  So if I was looking for Vit C, I would have a problem determining which may be best for me if I did not have it specified in latin what type of Vitamin C I decided on.

Be careful if you are looking for a certain well-researched ingredients: write them down, check the spelling, and be sure you are getting what you really want.  Remember also that certain ingredients may be specific to only a certain brand.

5. What is the shelf life of most natural skin care products

Most Natural Products have a shelf life of 3 -6 months depending on the type of preservative used.

6. Are all skin care products safe?

There is a huge difference between products so it all depends on the brand.  Ninety percent of the major manufacturers are careful about what is contained in their products.  Remember, legal suits are expensive and bad publicity can be a product killer.  So they are very careful.

Small companies may have ingredients that are outright harmful as a result of not having scientifically trained people formulating the products.

The best protection for any user is to be aware of the nature and quality of the ingredients.  Search for any information on the internet about the company and the ingredients if in doubt.

7. Can skin creams “cure” the problems in/on my skin.

By law, companies cannot make any claims about curing unless Okayed by the FDA.  Natural products generally do not seek FDA approval because of costs and time.  There are times when the “problem is actually cured”.  Other times, it is controlled by frequent or consistent use of the creams.

The ultimate criteria for “cures” rest in the nature of the skin problem.  Some abnormalities are just not medically or naturally curable.  This is not an attempt to be humorous but at times claiming something is “cured” depends on what the definition parameters are for a successful “cure”.  For instance, having a painful rash that is not red or itchy anymore after using a cream when a discoloration of the skin may still be evident to people.  The person may be satisfied just not to be itching and that is a success to them.

8. How long will it take to see improvement in my skin?

From 15 minutes for a softer skin; within three days for most of the different types of skin problems.  Natural ingredients may take longer.  With Synthetic ingredients, the time it takes may be quite spectacular in the amount of time there is visible results.  However, there is more danger of harmful side effects using synthetics.

My question is this; how can one expect total natural results using unnatural ingredients.

Something else to consider is the prolific amount of new technology and new discoveries that occur in the cosmetic/cosmeceutical industrty.  One will not work today may work tomorrow.  So, keep on trying to find the ultimate solution for you!

9. How can I know what the experience has been for other people using a certain products?

It is best to go to a manufacturer’s web page to see actual testimonies from real people.  Do not depend on their advertising.  Also search on google.com to see if there are any negative comments about the product or the company.

10. Is price a good guide for the quality of skin products.

Price does not guarantee the quality of the product.  It may at times be an indication of quality, but not of its effectiveness on your skin.

Now that you have a basic knowledge, start searching.  Don’t stay in a rut; your skin won’t!

Do Skin Creams “Cure” the Skin Problem?

Skin TherapyWhen a person uses the word “Cure”, the listener has many notions regarding the speaker’s perception of cure. What is the length of time the cure will be effective.  Is it permanent, is it visible, will the process, device or product work for others, is the cure a perception of the one cured or can it be validated by independent observation.  Like many words we use, ”Cure” is relative. However, legally the word cure cannot be used in advertising including testimonials unless approved by the FDA. In the past, the FDA generally left the natural products, cosmetics, and  like industries alone.  Because of the abuse unscrupulous vendors used to dupe potential clients, the FDA is reacting because of the numerous complaints by the public.

BEWARE of any claims for healing or curing by a product!

Healing Process

There are conditions that will heal of their own accord.  If a skin cream is applied to speed up the process, how does one differentiate between attributing the “cure” to the cream or to natural causes?  Generally a specific skin cream for a specific skin condition results in a temporary solution.  It is effective in treating the symptoms rather than the cause.

The reason for this is that many of the problems manifested in the skin may be caused by internal bodily deficiencies caused by diet, disease, the aging process, allergies, etc.  Other reasons for not obtaining permanent relief are due to the chemistry of the body rejecting the ingredients which can be perplexing when you know it works for others.  One more obvious reason may be due to the remedy not suitable for the skin type.  For any persistent condition that does not respond to topical solutions, contact your doctor. Ask him to suggest natural solutions or at least be aware of the side effects for any pharmaceutical prescriptions.

Healing Claims

The FDA will not allow any claims of healing or curing being made unless it is approved by them.  To obtain and FDA approval takes a couple of years or more as well as substantial costs that could total millions of dollars.  Most small businesses cannot afford to get FDA approval on their product(s).  The FDA is becoming stricter in its definitions and enforcement.  For example, testimonials were allowed as given by the user.  As of this year, the FTC has tightened up their regulations on testimonies.  Any testimonies in which there has been a remuneration or benefits paid for the testimony must be disclosed.

The FDA monitors the internet to catch any infringement of the law.  The abusing source will get a letter from the FDA and could be subject to fines.  These letters become public on the FDA website.  The ramification for the abuser is loss of credibility, revenues, and future scrutiny by the FDA.  Therefore, there will be less claims of healing, etc in the foreseeable future.

Use Due Diligence

Ultimately, we are responsible for our own physical conditions and recovery process.  Learn to research on the internet for information regarding your health.  With today’s search engines, you need not take someone else’s recommendations to remain healthy.  Make informed decisions.

Be assured that Rene Derme is committed to ensure that FDA standards are met for advertising, information presented on our web site, ReneDerme.com and on our labels.

How to apply our creams

Take a little on the end of your finger. Now spread it on the back of your hand. Notice how much of an area that little amount of cream covered. Let yourself feel the luxuriousness of the cream itself on your skin. As I am talking to you now, the heat in your hand is helping the cream be absorbed into your skin. Once there, the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants of the ingredients in the formula is rejuvenating your cells and changing the pores of your skin making them smaller.

Now touch the area where the cream was applied. You should not only feel the difference but also see the difference between you hands. Since the cream is now working from the inside out, you will be able to wash your hand without washing the cream off. As proof of that, again run your finger over the area you applied the cream. You will not be able to feel any oil residue, smudge marks, nor discoloration of any kind. That’s because the cream is IN the skin, not ON the skin. All you need is a couple of applications a day. If your job requires frequent washing of your hands, this cream will be a god send. If you suffer from dry, cracked skin, this cream will transform your skin.

Life from the Bee to Me

Honey BeeThe honey bee is the star of all the insects that impact our lives. Their labor is central to the welfare of our own lives. Consider their activities that have a direct bearing on our daily welfare. Bees pollinate plants, flowers, and trees which together compose 35 -50% of the food we eat, depending on the type of diet we follow.

As part of the pollination process, bees accomplish two vital processes: produce honey but just as important, they fertilize the trees to produce seeds for reproduction or food for us and wildlife when the seeds mature. Let’s consider Honey which is beneficial to our health and well-being beyond our just eating it.  It has many medicinal properties such as helping our bodies stave off infections and internal inflammations which is one of the chief culprits in heart attacks, arthritis and other common maladies of the human race.  Honey is one of the major food sources for antioxidants which save the destruction of our cells.

Since honey is also predigested, it has played an important role in cosmetics through the centuries. Honey not only keeps the skin remain in peak condition to protect us from a hostile environment invading our bodies but also keeps us younger looking and attractive. In a large sense, we can easily proclaim that the bee plays a significant role in much of the beauty that surrounds us in humans, plants, animals and flowers.

So the bee’s role is directly tied to life and beauty. It is no paradox then to realize that Honey is the only natural product that does not spoil, nor require special consideration in storage. It can be kept at room temperature or refrigerated; it does not need to be specially wrapped or sealed. There is no expiration date needed either. This is not to say that the texture won’t change but, it will not rot or spoil.

The bee’s labor also provides many life sustaining ingredients through their industriousness. In order to keep a constant temperature in the hive, the bees seal any opening with a special mixture called propolis. Propolis is very popular among many cultures as a type of chewing gum although it is much healthier for us than the gum we typically associate with the term. Propolis actually protects the gums from gingivitis and keeps our teeth and mouth healthy. Propolis is also able to stimulate the immune system. It works by increasing the formation of antibodies to build our body resistance to diseases and by stimulating our body to release chemicals that protects us from cellular deterioration.

The cells inside the hive which contain the honey and immature bees are made of wax (bees wax) which is used in the cosmetic industry for items such as cosmetics, salves, body care products, lotions and you can melt it down to make your own aromatic candles. Bees Wax candles are the finest candles money can buy because not only do they provide light but, they do not pollute the air.

Bee colonies also have only one bee called the queen bee that produces new bees for their hive. They use a special food to feed her called Royal Jelly which is used in the most expensive cosmetics. The claims for royal jelly are varied ranging from special medicinal properties to increasing energy in our system. Some people who have used royal jelly swear by it and have a lot of praise while others dispute its effectiveness.

Pollen is part of the flowering plants that bees collect. Pollen is collected from the hives and sold as a remedy for people who have allergies. To be effective, it is recommended that it comes from reputable beekeepers within seventy five miles from where you live.

The one negative factor about bees for most people is their ability to sting. However, the poison they inject can be a very powerful curative for arthritis. There is a type of arthritic therapy that consists of using a syringe and needle to directly inject into arthritic joints.

When at last the little bee’s life is over, their usefulness continues. Their bodies contain protein that can be fed to chickens and in some cultures, consumed by humans.

So the next time you see a bee, don’t swat it; tip your hat or wave a thank you in their direction. Just be sure that you do not try to shake their hand.

Cuticle Care with Rene Derme Creams

Michelle Pratt

Michelle Pratt

I’m pretty skeptical when I hear about a new cream on the market.  Having been a nail technician for 15 years, I’ve come to expect little more than a change of scent as the distinguishing characteristic of a new product.

However, Rene Derme earns the distinction of entering the beauty industry as a product that offers something unique.

This all-natural cream combines the healing properties of honey and aloe with six different oils to create a thick, rich cream that moisturizes and restores damaged skin.

In less than a minute of using Rene Derme’s Skin Renewal Cream, my red, dry, New York skin was smooth and soft.  With consistent use, my cuticles were transformed.  No longer were they dry, cracked, and frayed.  Over the course of weeks, my cuticles healed and were gorgeous.  As an added benefit of no longer picking my dry cuticles, my fingernails were able to grow for the first times since changing careers.

They say you can tell a woman’s age by looking at her hands.  After using Rene Derme creams, I feel as if I’ve turned the clock back 10 years.  I’m no longer ashamed of my hands and nails.

When I contacted Greg Martin, founder of Rene Derme, to let him know how pleased I was  with the results, he reminded me that the natural properties of the ingredients heal many common skin maladies, such as rashes, itching, and burns.  I decided to put it to the test.

My husband who is a registered nurse, has a recurring dry spot that shows up around his eye every winter.  We jokingly refer to it as “winter eye.” It’s a continual source of embarrassment to him.  He has tried every over-the-counter treatment cream and ointment out there.

I gave him the Rene Derme Rapid Skin Repair Cream to use.  He never made any comment about the cream working.  The only way I knew that he was pleased with the results is that he never complained about his eye again, and he asked me if I could “get more of that cream.” He was hooked.

I could give plenty more examples of how Rene Derme surprised me by performing as well as it claims.  It has helped with insect bites, burns, and cracked and itchy skin.  I have recommended it for a variety of skin ailments when friends complain, and have been extremely impressed with the results.

I know how easy it is to dismiss a testimonial–so please don’t take my word for it.  Try Rene Derme yourself.  With a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can be confident that you’ll be pleased with your purchase of Rene Derme cream.

Honey for Oral Wellness

Many of us are frightened of the thought of going to a dentist.  For years, I would not go to a dentist because I was afraid of a needle plunging into my gums.  I also sweated when the dentist was working on my teeth hearing the whirring of the drill. All I could think of was the pain that would follow once the Novocain wore off.  Now I can relax because I can control the pain associated with oral wellness.  So can you for cheaply and effectively.

Buy a bottle of honey, preferably local honey from a store that has a local supplier.  The reason for that is their honey will probably be cold processed unlike you would get in a supermarket.  Commercial honey processors heat the honey to a temperature that may diminish it effectiveness.  Commercial processors also add water or sugar which also dilutes its effectiveness.  However, if chain store honey is all that is available to you, make sure you purchase a known brand of honey.

Put the honey directly on you tooth, teeth or gums after surgery and the pain will be substantially reduced or stopped totally.  In fact, honey is also good for preventing acute problems if you add the use of honey in your oral care on a regular basis.

Honey will hinder the growth of infection, gingivitis, bad breath from oral infections, reduces inflammation and pain and increases the rate of healing after trauma such as surgery.

See testimonial on ReneDerme.com from an Oral Surgeon and his patient as an example of the power of honey on oral surgery.

For continuous use of honey in an oral wellness program, it will be much more beneficial to use darker local honey from stores specializing in Natural or Organic products.  It will be worth it especially in this period of our changing Insurance and heath care regulations.

Have a healthy breakfast with honey, oils, and grains

Many of us think of oils as mainly used in cooking or dressings.  Several years ago, I was in an upscale Italian restaurant.  The hostess put a small saucer like bowl on the table which contained a mixture of oil and spices.  I thought this might be for vegetables or something.  Then she also placed a basket of heavenly smelling, hot Italian rolls.  I asked for butter for the rolls.  She pointed to the bowl of oil and spices.  One of the people in my dinner party told me to dip the bread in the oil.

After some persuasion, I tried it.  Boy was it delicious.  I’m a person who can make a meal on good home baked bread.  I wanted more rolls which they brought to me.  We were out of the oil mixture so I asked for more.  Imagine my surprise when they filled the bowl up from a bottle of olive oil in which spices had been added.  That was a shock as I never cared for the taste of olive oil when used in cooking.  In of fact, I never thought of using oil for anything else except cooking.  I was told that there are higher qualities of olive oil used for a number of purposes beyond cooking.

Since then, I have used oils many times in making Rene Derme skin creams.  Since these oils were being absorbed into the skin, I thought perhaps they might be good for ingesting.  (I’m slow on the uptake sometimes.)  SO, I looked at the benefits of different oils and experimented with a recipe that would start my day off healthy rather than the normal quick Mac Donald’s variety.  I cannot have the popular cereals or milk.  So here is my answer to getting off the day on the right foot.

If you feel homesick for Mickey D, buy a parfait.  Add a spoonful each of the following: Honey, hemp seed oil, coconut oil and Avocado oil.  Add a flavored yogurt or a Greek tyoe yogurt preferably.  Add a grain such as oats, multi grain clusters (Kashi) or chopped nuts, raisins, etc.  Mix everything together.  You will have to determine the quantity of the final mixture to eat in order to control your weight.

The ingredients are for specific purposes, such as

  • Parfait:  flavor and fruit taste.
  • Greek Yogurt:  to thicken the mixture and add calcium.
  • Honey: the elixir of the gods; the perfect food.  Effectiveness depends on type of honey used.  Many scientifically tested and proven health and medicinal benefits.  High in antioxidants.
  • Avocado oil: for the heart as it controls cholesterol and lessens problems with the arteries.  loaded with proteins, lecithin, beta-carotene and vitamins A, D and E.
  • Coconut oil: Rich in vitamins, and minerals; Promotes loss of excess weight by increasing metabolic rate.  The coconut tree is sometimes referred to as the Tree of Life because of its many health benefits.  Particularly helpful for diabetics.
  • Hemp Seed oil:  provides protein; is easier to digest than soy; contains omega 3, omega 6 and GLA which relieves the effects of diabetic neuropathy and certain types of arthritis

Other ingredients primarily used for fiber to keep things moving in the digestive track especially to create an end product.  Also helpful in varying the mix if you want a different taste or consistency.

Have a great healthy breakfast a la Gregorio.  To your Health!!!  Don’t neglect to drink plenty of water and have a daily physical exercise.

Types of Preservatives in Cosmetics

There are two types:  Natural and Synthetics.  Without preservatives, most natural products would have a very short shelf life and would have many organisms growing in them such as bacteria, fungi, yeast and other potentially dangerous microorganisms.

Natural Preservatives may actually themselves be toxic to your skin.  For instance, examples of these would be Rosemary Extract and Black Willow Bark Extract.  Both can become unsafe and irritating to the skin when used in the massive quantities needed to effectively preserve water and oil based products like Lotions and Creams.

So synthetics are the more common type of preservative being used for personal care products.  Synthetics such as Parabens are the most commonly used preservative.  However, Parabens are only one group of many different types of preservatives that have been shown to cause a host of skin irritations, such as dryness, redness and even breakouts most frequently appearing as a rash containing postules.  Although there is some controversy surrounding the use of Parabens, paraben-based preservatives seem by far less dangerous, both for the skin, and for the environment, than most other types of synthetic preservatives.

Other types of harmful synthetics are phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfates, petrolatum which large sectors are moving away from.  For a complete list go to http://www.ewg.org/node/26733.

Presently Rene Derme products contain the following preservatives: Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate  A Preservative Derived from Glycine – A Naturally Occurring Amino Acid.

Phenoxyethanol  A mild antibacterial agent also used as a topical treatment for wound infections, and as a preservative in vaccines.

Since Rene Derme products are absorbed in the skin, we are constantly checking the releases from various to ensure that we are not using any preservative that is proven to be harmful.  In many cases, it is the amount used in the product, the number of applications that have been applied over a period of time plus the length of time the product has been used consistently.

CAUTION: When caring for sensitive skin, it’s important to avoid all types of synthetic preservatives especially if it is the only type used in a skin care product.

For other types of skin, a combination of both types in a product is acceptable in minute amounts.  Ultimately, it is a matter of personal preference, but be informed of the type of ingredients and the quantities used when what you are considering buying your creams.
